UNWTO & ATM Ministerial Forum on Tourism's contribution to sustainable and inclusive economic growth and diversification in the MENA region

Under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates

In the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017

The UNWTO & Arabian Travel Market Ministerial Forum on Tourism’s contribution to sustainable and inclusive economic growth and diversification in the MENA region, will bring together Ministers of Tourism and industry leaders in the MENA region to consider ways and means of capitalizing on Tourism growth in the region and building a sustainable ecosystem for the sector that would unlock its contribution to the fulfilment of their national agendas for GDP growth and economic diversification, innovation, entrepreneurship and productivity, job creation, human capital and infrastructure development, investment and export promotion.

The Forum will address the following issues:

  • Empowering evidence based decision making and accurate measurement of the contribution of Tourism to current and future economic growth - particularly as regards GDP, jobs and exports - and its multiplier effect on other sectors of the economy.
  • Enhancing the contribution of domestic tourism alongside international tourism (especially intra-regional) in delivering sustainable economic growth from the sector.
  • Main challenges and opportunities for securing investment in Tourism (FDI and domestic investment).
  • Strategies and measures to strengthen Tourism’s resilience to external shocks.
  • Ensuring that economic growth due to Tourism leads to the sustainable and inclusive development of host communities and the transition towards a green economy.
  • Investing in technology - driven innovations to enhance performance and improve competitiveness.
  • Policies to promote job creation and entrepreneurship.
  • Strengthening the sector’s institutional framework, engaging and aligning key governmental role players on Tourism policy issues and targets and developing result driven partnerships with local and international stakeholders.

Accounting and Statistics for Sustainable Tourism - Lunchtime Seminar

World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) organize this side-event on the occasion of 2017 as International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, and to underline that sustainable tourism is an important element of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as it relates to sustainable economic growth and decent employment. 

Within the context of the Statistical Commission this side event is intended to highlight the measurement issues of sustainable tourism and to provide further explanation to the report of UNWTO on tourism statistics (E/CN.3/2017/17). That report describes the planned development of a statistical framework for measuring sustainable tourism to support more integrated measurement and policy in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also proposes the development of a compilation guide for the Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA), and a technical note on linking the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA) and the TSA.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), its UNWTO.Themis Foundation and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) invite high-level decision makers in the national, regional and local tourism administrations and organizations, as well as senior tourism practitioners from tourism associations and industry groups and travel and tourism practitioners from the Caribbean region and the region of the Americas to apply for the UNWTO/CTO Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Destination Management and Marketing, scheduled to be held in Saint Lucia from 27 to 31 March 2017.

This executive training workshop will examine key concepts, processes and practices in sustainable tourism destination management and marketing, based on lessons learned internationally and in the region of the Americas. This executive training workshop is designed to equip tourism practitioners with knowledge, skills and tools to be used in the development of sustainable tourism destinations, as well as provide a forum for discussion about current issues and practices key to addressing the sustainable management and marketing of tourism destinations. The workshop will be conducted in English.

La Organización Mundial del Turismo, su Fundación OMT.Themis y el Ministerio de Turismo de Argentina invitan a los funcionarios de los Estados Miembros de la OMT a inscribirse y solicitar beca para el curso internacional de la OMT Excelencia en la gestión turística: El turista digital que se desarrollará del 11 al 16 de septiembre en Córdoba.

 

El programa de este año propone a los participantes cuatro días de curso teórico-práctico, durante el cual se realizarán presentaciones, discusiones, debates, trabajos en grupo y actividades prácticas, a fin de compartir conocimientos, herramientas, habilidades y la oportunidad de discutir y poner en práctica temas relevantes al marketing digital y la experiencia del turista.

El último día, viernes 16 de septiembre, habrá un evento abierto al público en general donde expertos internacionales en marketing digital en turismo informarán a los oyentes sobre las nuevas tendencias y darán ejemplos de buenas prácticas y casos internacionales relacionados con la temática.

Las becas cubrirán el costo total de la matrícula, el alojamiento, la manutención y el transporte interno en Córdoba requerido para el buen desarrollo del curso. Serán otorgadas a un máximo de 20 funcionarios de turismo, de habla hispana de los Estados Miembros de la OMT designados por la máxima autoridad al frente de la Administración Nacional de Turismo, quienes serán seleccionados según sus méritos, cualificaciones, experiencia y nivel de español.

Los candidatos internacionales deseosos de postular para la beca y participar en el curso de la OMT en Argentina deberán:

  • residir fuera de Argentina;

  • ser funcionarios cualificados de turismo de los Estados Miembros de la OMT;

  • ser designados por sus respectivos gobiernos, mediante una carta de nominación de la máxima autoridad al frente de la Administración Nacional de Turismo;

  • haber completado la educación universitaria validada por un título (por lo menos a nivel licenciatura o maestría);

  • tener un excelente dominio del español;

  • poseer una póliza de seguro internacional que cubra las incidencias más frecuentes de un viaje, en particular, que garantice asistencia sanitaria durante toda la estancia en el extranjero;

  • presentar oralmente información de su país sobre el tema del curso.

 

Los candidatos nacionales deseosos de postular para la beca y participar al curso de la OMT en Argentina deberán contactar con el Ministerio de Turismo de la Nación Argentina.

Para postular al curso y a las becas, los funcionarios de turismo de habla hispana de los Estados Miembros de la OMT interesados deberán:

  • cubrir los requisitos mencionados;

This UNWTO & INRouTe event is organized by in2destination, hosted by CISET – Università CaFoscari, right before the OECD & EUROSTAT Global Forum on Tourism Statistics. See the agenda for the workshop.

This workshop marked the first occasion prior to a Global discussion to comment on the document recently submitted by INRouTe to UNWTO titled: “TOURISM, TERRITORY AND SUSTAINABILITY: A STATISTICAL INSIGHT AT SUBNATIONAL LEVELS – Toward a Set of UNWTO Guidelines”. This document (except the annexes) was circulated for a global discussion last November 2016.
